PDA obtained planning permission for a replacement dwelling in the Charlton Kings area of Cheltenham. The key issues raised by the proposal were impact on TPO trees and the scale, architectural approach and materials.
Although the site was not located within a conservation area there was a locally held view that the typology in the area was dominated by architecture of the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style. PDA prepared detailed historic regression analysis and a heritage appraisal of the area to successfully make the case that the area in fact comprised a mix of styles, and that this should not determine the appropriate architectural approach for new dwellings. The approved design, prepared by Open Architecture London, promoted a style more grounded in Carolean architecture.
